CTCAE iPhone Application

CTCAE v4.0

CTCAE v4.0 is an app available in the iTunes App Store for bedside grading of adverse events on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad devices using the latest approved version of the National Cancer Institute’s Common Terminology Criteria Adverse Events standard. Members of a research team now have access to the 190+ pages of the original document in a portable, highly intuitive, hierarchical interface. CTCAE v3.0

CTCAE v3.0 provides the same functionality as the v4.0 application, but the content is based on the NCI-developed version 3 standard still used by some legacy research protocols. Download CTCAE3 free in the iTunes App STore at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ctcae3/id351401972?mt=8.

CTCAE v4.0/v3.0 Support

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) is a standardized system to quantify or grade the severity of adverse events (AE) that occur with drug treatment or from medical devices. A definition of mild (grade 1), moderate (2), severe (3) and life-threatening (4) events is provided for each AE term.

Two versions of the CTCAE are widely used and are supported by separate CBMi-developed mobile health applications:

  • CTCAEv4.0 was published by NCI on May 28, 2009 and is increasingly used by many healthcare providers and researchers to characterize adverse events consistently.
  • CTCAEv3.0 was published by NCI on Aug 9, 2006 and, although currently used in many legacy clinical research studies, is being retired in deference to the release of the newer version described above.

The Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has converted the 260+ pages of both CTCAE documents into intuitive iPhone applications. With these applications, healthcare providers can reference the full CTCAE v3.0 and v4.0 with an iPhone or iPod Touch, allowing for bedside grading at the time of a visit and generally allowing the information to be accessed from anywhere at any time.

CTCAE v3.0 and CTCAE v4.0 for the iPhone are both comprised of two distinct elements:

Content: All content within CTCAE v3.0/v4.0 has been developed by NCI. We defer all inquiries for support of that content to https://webapps.ctep.nci.nih.gov/webobjs/ctc/webhelp/welcome_to_ctcae.htm

iPhone Application: The application was developed by CBMi. Inquiries concerning the following application-focused issues, including:

  • Errors or omissions in the application content relative to the original
  • Feature bugs
  • Requests for additional functionality
